Injury Report – 6/17

Jeff Davis provides an update in today's edition of the Injury Report.

Hello and welcome to the Injury Report!

This roundup is a biweekly article, published on Mondays and Fridays, where I aim to detail approximately five relevant injuries that have occurred over the past few days or provide an update on the injury of a prominent MLB player. I will try to incorporate the available information as well as my own knowledge and experience to approximate a return date in each case, noting the individual characteristics of the injuries and of the players themselves.

If you have questions regarding an injury not detailed in this article, feel free to comment below, and I will give my best effort to provide a timely update.

Kyle Hendricks – Right Shoulder Inflammation

Kyle Hendricks has hit the IL with right shoulder inflammation. He will be shut down from throwing until the inflammation is managed. A conservative timetable would be a four- to six-week absence. If there is structural damage, that timetable will increase significantly.

Estimated return: Early August.

Noah Syndergaard – Right Hamstring Strain

Noah Syndergaard was placed on the IL with a right hamstring strain of an unknown grade. Syndergaard underwent an MRI on Sunday, though at the time of writing, no further details have been released. For now, this appears to be a minor strain with the possibility of a minimum IL stay.

Estimated return: Late June.

Byron Buxton – Right Wrist Injury

Byron Buxton is playing through a right wrist contusion following an HBP. X-rays came back negative. The right wrist for a right-handed batter does not significantly contribute to power, and I don’t expect a large effect on Buxton’s bat as he works through this contusion for the next few days. He sat out Saturday and Sunday but is likely to return to the lineup during the Twins series against Boston.

Estimated return: June 17.

Hunter Pence – Right Groin Tightness

Hunter Pence is considered day-to-day with right groin tightness. Pence does not have a history of groin injuries. Pence was pulled from Sunday’s game, and there is no official timetable at this time. Look for an update today. I have not seen any reports indicating that imaging has been ordered.

Estimated return: Middle of this week.

Nomar Mazara – Right Hamstring Tightness

Nomar Mazara has been ordered to undergo an MRI following a hamstring injury that removed him from action Saturday. At the moment, this injury is being described as “tightness,” though an MRI will detail if Mazara sustained a hamstring strain. Look for an update following that MRI. If it remain tightness, Mazara can likely return around the weekend or early next week. A Grade 1 strain would indicate a two- to four-week absence and an IL stint.

Estimated return: This weekend or early next week.

    Any word on Moncada?

    • Jeff Davis says:

Nothing too detailed. I guess he’s close, so long as he didn’t exacerbate things on Sunday… but we’re still truly day-to-day.

  2. Immaculate Inning says:

Looking for any kind of information on Carrasco’s condition and when he might be back on the mound. Can’t find a thing. They’re keeping this one real close to the vest.

    • Jeff Davis says:

Nothing. Cleveland and Carrasco are not sharing much information. I’ve not seen any operations or other drastic interventions mentioned, just that he is to “explore treatment options”. There are a wide range of potential conditions.

    • Immaculate Inning says:

I know it’s conjecture, but more or less likely he’ll be back this year around August in your opinion?

  3. Chucky says:

Buxton out for Monday, June 17. Keep an eye on Realmuto, his injury could be similar to Haniger’s. Not sure Philly isn’t keeping this close to the vest.
