Injury Report—5/17

Jeff Davis provides an update in Monday's edition of the Injury Report.

Hello and welcome to the Injury Report!

This roundup is a biweekly article, published on Mondays and Fridays, where I aim to detail approximately five relevant injuries that have occurred over the past few days or provide an update on the injury of a prominent MLB player. I will try to incorporate the available information as well as my own knowledge and experience to approximate a return date in each case, noting the individual characteristics of the injuries and of the players themselves.

If you have questions regarding an injury not detailed in this article, feel free to comment below, and I will give my best effort to provide a timely update.

Jesus LuzardoLeft Rotator Cuff Strain

Jesus Luzardo update was requested in the comments of the 5/13 Injury Report. Luzardo has been throwing from 120 feet for some time and has had his first bullpen. He is expected to make a minor league debut prior to the end of May, though it will likely be a limited pitch count and perhaps in the low minors. Luzardo may be an option for the A’s during the latter half of June, though they may be conservative with him considering his prospect status.

Estimated return: Healthy to return in late June but may not be on MLB club at that time.

Zack GreinkeAbdominal Injury

Zack Greinke removed himself from his Wednesday outing after experiencing abdominal tightness. He is set to undergo an MRI on Friday. Greinke stated this injury doesn’t feel as serious as the oblique strain he suffered in 2016, which sidelined him for over a month. Look for the MRI results to identify if we have an abdominal strain and to identify a grade if strain if applicable.

Estimated return: Will depend on MRI results.

Trevor StoryKnee Contusion

Trevor Story is dealing with a bruised knee, for which he was removed from Wednesday’s game. Story is hopeful to play todaywe will see if he is ablebut in general, a contusion shouldn’t hold him out for an extended period.

Estimated return: Likely to return today or this weekend.

Trevor WilliamsRight Side Discomfort

Trevor Williams left his start Thursday because of “right side discomfort.” The first thought is an oblique injury, though typically a right-handed pitcher will injure his left oblique in the pitching motion. I didn’t see his at-bat, but it’s possible he could have tweaked something during a swing. No imaging has been reported, so for now, we wait and see. If we’re not heading for an MRI, I would expect one start to be missed maximum.

Estimated return: Likely minor, should be able to take next turn or subsequent turn in the rotation.

Yandy DiazAnkle Discomfort

Yandy Diaz left Wednesday’s game because of ankle discomfort that appeared to occur while running the bases. To my knowledge, no diagnostic imaging has been completed, and at the surface level, this appears to be a minor injury. Diaz may be eased back into action this weekend but should return to full duties in the first half of next week.

Estimated return: Early next week.

Thanks Jeff. Did you watch the Conforto play? I know concussions are hard to predict, but if you have any thoughts…

I did watch it, but like you said concussions are hard to the predict. The Mets are doing the right thing by keeping him on the sidelines. Ultimately we will see how long it takes for his symptoms to subside and he should be eased into a return at that point. I wasn’t able to find any reports of previous concussions, and that bodes well for a speedy recovery!
