UPDATES

Jake Lamb (3B, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Lamb has had at-bats in an extended spring training game and is set to play 5-7 innings in the field later this week. He could meet the 4-24-18 estimated return.

Taijuan Walker (SP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – The Tommy John call has been made – Walker is out for the remainder of the year and is droppable in redraft leagues.

Welington Castillo (C, Chicago White Sox) – It seems that the White Sox are taking things easy on Beef as he returns from knee soreness – he may continue to miss the occasional day or two.

Scott Schebler (OF, Cincinnati Reds) – Schebler is set to return on 4-20-18. Let’s see if he wears an elbow guard this time…

Salvador Perez (C, Kansas City Royals) – Salvy is rehabbing extremely well and may return within a week. He is currently catching for Triple-A Omaha without concern.

Josh Harrison (2B, Pittsburgh Pirates) – I was off on my initial guess, and Harrison did fracture his 5th metacarpal once again. He fractured it the first time in September of last year, so, unfortunately, we don’t have that example to guide our estimate at the return to play. Six weeks seems reasonable. There is no extra concern regarding him fracturing the same bone a second time.

Wil Myers (OF, San Diego Padres) – Myers may return as soon as Friday, depending on how his rehab appearance (the first where he is playing the field) goes on Wednesday.

Kevin Kiermaier (OF, Tampa Bay Rays) – Based on the lengthy timetable provided by the Rays I feel this isn’t the same ligament that Trout injured last year – it was difficult to see with the replay angles available.

Delino DeShields (OF, Texas Rangers) – DeShields is well ahead of his timetable as he heads off to begin a rehab assignment at the tail end of this week.

Josh Donaldson (3B, Toronto Blue Jays) – Donaldson has been ruled out for this weekend’s series against the Yankees. There is potential for him to return on Tuesday. Check Monday’s Injury Report for an update.

Brian Goodwin (OF, Washington Nationals) – Goodwin ended up requiring a DL stint for his sore left wrist. It sounds as though he had to be convinced to head to the DL, so I don’t envision his stay being longer than 10 days.

Anthony Rendon (3B, Washington Nationals) – The Nats are hopeful that Rendon will be back in the lineup on Friday. It sounds as though he had blood drained from his big toe which should help to relieve swelling and pain.

ADDITIONS

Freddie Freeman (1B, Atlanta Braves) – Freeman was HBP in the exact same spot that ended up with a wrist fracture and a 44 game absence last year. We will get a better idea of the severity of this injury once further tests are completed.

Jose Ramirez (RP, Atlanta Braves) – Ramirez has reportedly been dealing with shoulder inflammation for a few days and was just placed on the DL10. He will be shut down from throwing for a bit, though it’s not yet clear how severe this injury is.

Anibal Sanchez (SP, Atlanta Braves) – Sanchez went down with an undisclosed left leg injury during pre-game sprints. Some reports list that he was clutching his hamstring. Severity and nature of injury remain unknown, though he was taken off in an air-cast. It doesn’t look good.

Ben Zobrist (OF, Chicago Cubs) – Did the Cubs have another series in CIN recently? All joking aside, this appears minor for Zobrist for now. Expect him in the lineup prior to the end of the weekend.

Devin Mesoraco (C, Cincinnati Reds) – I always stress with wrist injuries that an X-ray cannot always accurately determine whether or not a fracture has occurred. For the moment, this appears to just be a contusion and we shouldn’t miss Mesoraco for too long. With that said, keep an eye out for updates.

Carlos Gonzalez (OF, Colorado Rockies) – Gonzalez appeared to pull his hamstring during a catch in the fourth inning, stayed in for a few batters, and then left the game. I’m encouraged that he didn’t need to leave the game immediately. The Rockies have a day off on Thursday, so CarGo may grace your lineup as soon as Friday (4-20-18) with the baked-in day off.

Shohei Ohtani (SP/DH, Los Angeles Angels) – Ohtani left yesterday’s game due to a blister that reportedly appeared during his previous start. It worries me that it was an issue despite 9 days between starts. It worries me that Ohtani missed 6 weeks with a blister during his 2016 campaign in Japan. It worries me that he is still going to pick up a bat over this time. Hopefully, the window to sell-high didn’t close with his most recent outing as it just feels like there are too many things going on here for this to end up well. Redditor u/nipponbaseball shared a picture of the blister on Reddit – it looks bad!

Byron Buxton (OF, Minnesota Twins) – Buxton is dealing with severe migraines which have kept him out of action for two games. Bux will be re-assessed prior to Friday’s game. Hopefully, his issues have resolved by that point – migraines are difficult to predict. Buxton has a history of migraines, which reportedly ‘linger’ at times.

Ryan Braun (OF, Milwaukee Brewers) – Braun’s left calf is acting up. The same calf sent him to the DL10 two times last season – he missed about 2 months cumulative between DL stints and DTD time.

Luis Cessa (RP, New York Yankees) – Within 12 hours of being called up, Cessa will head to the DL with an oblique strain. Though no official timetable has been provided, it is reasonable to assume we won’t see him contribute for the Yanks until mid-May at the earliest.

Tommy Kahnle (RP, New York Yankees) – Kahnle hit the DL with shoulder tendinitis after featuring reduced velocity since the end of Spring Training. Of the tendons that cross the shoulder joint, the most likely offender is the supraspinatus tendon as it contributes to the internal rotation of the shoulder joint (helps to explain the reduced velocity). This is often caused by an underlying issue – the tendon of supraspinatus can become inflamed when pressure is applied to the tendon due to an inflamed bursa that rests on top of that tendon. Typically, this condition can be managed conservatively with injections, icing, and rest. If that doesn’t work, surgery may be required – which would obviously elongate Kahnle’s absence.

Evan Longoria (3B, San Francisco Giants) – Longo is DTD with the same ankle injury that he dealt with during Spring Training. Bochy does not appear concerned and feels Longoria will just require a couple days of rest.

Tommy Pham (OF, St. Louis Cardinals) – The product of this injury is likely the O’Neill call-up – he may be worth a look. For now, this appears minor as Pham said he had hoped to play Wednesday prior to the game being postponed due to rain. Pham will reportedly undergo additional tests which should give us insight into his condition and timetable.

Matt Duffy (3B, Tampa Bay Rays) – Duffy’s injury is reportedly mild and he expects to return when first eligible on 4-27-18.

Tony Barnette (RP, Texas Rangers) – The Rangers don’t appear concerned, though limited information is currently available. This may have been about the roster spot, if I’m being honest (One SS hurt, another possibly concussed but you’re not yet sure he needs a DL stint. RP recently came off the DL and threw 40 pitches in an outing).

Jurickson Profar (SS, Texas Rangers) – Rangers are hopeful that Profar will not hit the concussion DL. An off-day on Thursday buys him an additional day, and we should have more information prior to Friday’s game.

Marco Estrada (SP, Toronto Blue Jays) – Did the Jays play a series in CIN? Okay, fine, I’ll stop. Estrada experienced some back tightness during his 4-11-18 start, which held him out of action on Tuesday. He will reportedly start today (4-19-18).

Any details on Schoop’s recovery? His MRI revealed a Grade 1. Yelich’s MRI for same injury came back clean. Zunino has been out since before opening day with a Grade 1. Estimated return date for Schoop seems optimistic and could be out as long as month. Thoughts?

      Hi Let’s Play Two,
One of the difficult parts of oblique injuries is that they come into play in almost every athletic motion – as such, rest is really prioritized for the first phase of recovery. Schoop could be a situation, like Yelich, where we go from no action and no updates to back on the field within a week.
With that said, I may be too optimistic on Schoop, though I do have some reasons for taking that stance. First, Schoop strained his right side oblique which is the backside when hitting. Zunino and Yelich each strained their front side, which undergoes a quick and strong contraction during a swing. Second, Schoop stayed in and tried to play through the injury – it indicates to me that he felt it was a minor issue at the time, which speaks to a quick return to play.
Yelich missed a total of 12 days with his oblique injury, and for the moment it is difficult to guess at whether Schoop will miss more or less, but I’m optimistic this may only be a 10-day absence.
Hope this helped! Thanks for reading!

This is great…I appreciate the elaboration…and hope you’re right about his return date. If I remember correctly, I thought Yelich played through his injury the same game it bothered him as well.

Not that we were expecting a major power breakout, but does the hamate injury (and possibly the speedy return) limit any chance Delino might have had at cracking the 10 HR barrier?

    • Jeff Davis says:

      Hi AC!
It is difficult to say definitively at this point, but there is a possibility of residual effects. That risk may be compounded if DeShields is playing through the pain in an effort to return to the lineup sooner. It’s one of those things where we’ll need to monitor batted ball data (pull/center/oppo, exit velocity, FB/LD rate) once he returns to understand how the injury may affect him going forward.
Great question, and thanks for reading!

I also wanted to ask you about Knebel, since I own him as well. I read somewhere that he could be back June or around All-Star break. Power pitchers rely so much on their lower body. Conservatively, when do you expect him to come back and how effective will he be in the counting stats? I’m wondering if I should drop him and make room on my roster.

    • Jeff Davis says:

A return in early-June isn’t out of the question, but it’s a situation where we’re waiting to see how he progresses before we make any updates. He remains on schedule to return in mid-to-late May if he begins showing some signs of progress soon.
In terms of effectiveness, if he recovers fully then there is no reason to expect residual effects from this injury. I don’t love that he injured the hamstring in his landing leg – it will undergo a lot of stress when delivering a pitch – but if the injury is managed properly there shouldn’t be anything physically holding him back. I also haven’t kept the keenest eye on the Brewers’ closer situation, but it sounds like Barnes isn’t the steadiest fill-in so I expect Knebel will have his role back once he returns.
Dropping Knebel depends on how many DL slots you have and other needs for your team. That question may be better answered by Nick during an AMA on reddit :)
