Hitter List 8/10: Top 150+ Hitters For 2022 – Week 18

The top 150 hitters for 2022 fantasy baseball, plus a taxi squad.

It’s the first post-deadline Hitter List! While most players didn’t move a whole lot, I’ll be sure to touch on players who saw any kind of change in their rest-of-season outlook.
First, let’s get some basics out of the way in terms of how to interpret these rankings. None of this stuff should come as any major surprise, but it never hurts to provide background:

  • I took Trevor Story at the end of the Too Early Mock Draft and I already regret it. No idea what’s wrong with these Red Sox hitters but it’s not fun.

  • Whit Merrifield only has three extra-base hits and one steal in his last 51 plate appearances. I had hoped the new team would give him a boost, but apparently, all it got him was his booster. Hey-oh!
  • Jorge Mateo has really taken control of his plate discipline, and my only question is how high the strikeout rate goes in his next slump and how long it stays that high. If it’s short and sweet, I could see bringing him up another tier or two thanks to that power and speed that has always been there but sandbagged by his plate skills.

TIER 14

  • Nick Gordon has speed, some power, and a nice spot in the Twins lineup. Scoop him up everywhere you need speed.

  • I added a few options if you’re looking for specific stats. Just look for the “Cheap” and you’ll find them.

Really appreciate the Mateo love this week.

Christian Walker – it is not his fault he is a snek…he has been consistent a .200 dinger machine all year battling cleanup on a not-horrible (at least the top of the lineup) AZ offense.

Don’t get lazy on the taxi squad ;) MJ Melendez!

Thanks! Mateo deserved the big bump as the plate discipline change suggests this might be more sustainable than a random hot streak.

Walker’s issue is the ratios. He’s barely slugging .450 despite those home runs because he keeps rolling over into the shift. Sure, it’s better than a strikeout most of the time, and I appreciate that he cut those down, but he’s more of a wide-awake sleeper for 2023 (no shift) than super exciting for me. He’s a decent corner infielder, if you play in leagues that have that kind of depth (and most leagues I play in do), but the standard Yahoo format doesn’t have one and it makes Walker rather fringey.

  3. Brian McMahon says:

Two things: first, Wilmer Flores is on The List at 143 and also on the Taxi Squad.

Second, I am curious what you think about David Fletcher. He is apparently getting an extended look as leadoff hitter on the Angels, hitting right before Ohtani.

  4. Rowdy says:

2023 shift is a great point about Walker, and I wonder what that implies for his ratios – maybe more like 2019 for him (his last full season)?

After 108 games, the guy is tied for 8th in MLB home runs, more RBIs than Mookie Betts (consistent sac flies), same .207 as Schwarber, hits cleanup every night (they haven’t really moved him around the lineup the past two years), is somehow available in 45% of ESPN leagues and was a waiver pickup in June/July for a lot of people. (My man) Rowdy Tellez is the next best waiver power bat (22HRs, 70RBIs) and he does not play every day, though he has as many ABs as Goldy.

Walker had some health issues and has only played more than 115 games once. That was in 2019 and he hit 29HRs with a .259 BA (also stole 8 bases). Walker is consistently hitting 1-2 HRs a week, I really haven’t been able to bench him in the corner spot over a guy like Ke’Bryan Hayes, who really isn’t doing much and usually fights for my utility position. As long as he stays healthy, the guy should be a consistent points supplier and is arguably one of the top waiver bats of the year (shoutout to eligibility king Brandon Drury).

Are he + Varsho are overlooked by the average fantasy player because they are on the sneks and they play games that start at 10pm EST? Maybe, maybe not, but Christian Walker deserves better!

  5. Rowdy says:

Also – Ke’Bryan Hayes is Josh Rojas minus 0.25BA (in 100 more ABs)

  6. Emilio says:

Carlos Correa is way too high. Been hot garbage all season.

  7. Idles of Marsh says:

    Hey Scott,

I just added Hays after he was dropped in my league. I guess you haven’t lost too much faith in him, I’m just wondering what you see for him over the next little while.

    Thanks.
