Must Play SP: Charlie Morton, HOU ($21,400) @ ARI
Keta Maeda is the most expensive pitcher of the day but he likely won’t last more than 6 innings. I am going with Charlie Morton and his 99 mph heater today. He will take on Zack Greinke ($18,900) and the Diamondbacks. I actually like both the pitchers in this matchup but chose to go with Morton since Gerrit Cole was able to dominate the same lineup with 16 strikeouts. Charlie Morton’s career numbers against the Dbacks aren’t stellar but he has been a completely different pitcher since gaining velocity on his fastball. In his only start against the Diamondbacks last year, Morton went 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 9Ks.
Lineup Honorable Mention: Zack Greinke, ARI ($18,900) VS HOU
Value SP: Trevor Cahill, OAK ($15,100) VS BAL
Trevor Cahill figured something out last year and was pitching really well before getting hurt. He had 3.27 ERA and 29.5 % K rate in those 7 starts. He seems to be doing the same thing this year. In the early going, he has a 3.0 ERA with a 9.0 + K/9. Cahill is an upside play as he has shown strikeout upside while the Orioles strikeout almost 25% of the time, which is good for 6th worst. In his career, Cahill has a 36.5% K rate with 2.44 FIP against the current Orioles roster.
Honorable Mention: Caleb Smith, MIA ($14,700) @ CIN
IF Brian Dozier, MIN ($8,600) @ CWS
Brian Dozier is only hitting .242 but does have 5 home runs for the year. Yesterday, he was a double shy of the cycle against the White Sox. He gets another easy matchup today with the lefty, Hector Santiago, taking the mound for the White Sox today. Dozier has been able to hit lefties for .294 Average which is expected since he hit about .080 better against lefties in 2017 as well. Dozier is also one of those hitters that tend to have hot/cold streaks. This might be the beginning of one of his hot streaks.
Honorable Mention: IF Robinson Cano, SEA ($7,700) @ LAA
OF Lorenzo Cain, MIL ($8,000) VS PIT
Lorenzo Cain is one of the few players that can earn points in a lot of different ways, including XBHs and SBs. Lorenzo has 8 stolen bases to go along with his 4 home runs and gets to play in a hitter’s park in Milwaukee. Taillon is not a bad pitcher but he does carry a 19.0 HR/FB rate. Cain will also get plenty of opportunities as he bats leadoff for a high powered Brewers lineup.
Honorable Mention: OF Khris Davis, OAK ($9,400) VS BAL
Value OF: Matt Kemp, LAD ($6,300) @ SD
This game is actually not in San Diego but instead in Mexico. Expect the high altitude to be a factor as some fly balls might turn into home runs. Matt Kemp is definitely the type of hitter to benefit from the altitude. He has a 34% FB rate and is 1-2 (Homerun) in his career against the opposing pitcher and is an everyday starter in the Dodgers’ lineup. He is obviously not the same player he once used to be, but he can still provide value and has hit safely in 9 out of the last 11 games.
Honorable Mention: OF Adam Engel, CWS ($5,700) VS MIN
Top Stack: White Sox VS Twins (RHP Lance Lynn)
I played a Minnesota Twins stack yesterday and it worked out great with Eduardo Escobar and Brian Dozier. Tonight, I expect the opposite. Lance Lynn has a career 8.81 FIP with .405 Average against the current White Sox roster. Shockingly, his season era is worse – 8.37.
