- Despite the resurgence of Corey Knebel and the dominance of Josh Hader, it appears as if the Brewers are content now with Jeremy Jeffress as their primary closer for the rest of the season. He needs to be owned in all formats for the rest of the year.
- The Brad Hand, Cody Allen duo continue to swap roles, and now it looks as if Allen is back in the drivers seat for saves moving forward. Both are probably worth rostering at this point of the year.
- Yoshihisa Hirano is trending up and looks like the favorite for saves the next two weeks in Arizona. He’s converted 2/3 save chances he’s seen this past week and is worth owning in most formats.
- Dellin Betances may be running out of chances to earn saves with Aroldis Chapman close to returning. Neither is ideal to use this week, especially for those of you in the championship round, but for those looking forward to next week, Chapman can be added if available.
- Sergio Romo, Craig Kimbrel, and Felipe Vazquez all picked up 3 saves this past week. It’s good to see Romo back and pitching, 3 straight days nonetheless, after being used just once between August 25th and September 15th. He seems healthy, so I’d imagine the Rays continue to roll him out there to close out (most) games.
Who would have thought that Jeffress would ever get to this point? The Brewers literally pulled this opportunity from him a few years ago and traded him a way to a team with a poor bullpen where he couldn’t get save ops. Its pretty crazy.
Really is crazy how his career has come full circle since debuting for the Brewers. I kept expecting a drop off from him this season but it never came.
As skeptical as I was a week ago, I think Hirano will get all the save ops going forward. I think the biggest issue might be ineffectiveness of the bullpen and finding saves.
That bullpen is crumbling by the minute, but I’m hoping the team as a whole is still talented enough to keep it together for the next week so Hirano can add another 2, maybe saves.
