Category Power Rankings: Week 2

Each fantasy category broken down for your guidance by Colin Ward

It’s time for your weekly dose of CPR!

Before you indulge, I would like to address the fact that there will not be a ton of changes amongst the overall rankings for each category. Even in a 60-game season, it is smart to stay true to your studs after only one week. That being said, the leash needs to be shortened.

Let’s dive in…

Off the list: Tim Anderson (injury), Juan Soto

The bulk of the movement here is moreso based off of my own adjustments since last week than actual results thus far. Nick Castellanos has been an absolute monster in his new Cincy threads thus far. Personally, I fully expect him to continue to produce in that favorable ballpark especially being able to feast on rotations such as the Tigers, Royals, etc.

Off the list: Kolten Wong

Hanser Alberto can flat out hit. The Orioles’ infielder is off to a tremendous start at the dish hitting safely in eight of his first nine games and at a sizzling .400 clip thus far. Alberto is coming off a 2019 campaign where he hit .305 across 139 games. Don’t sleep on him.

As I am writing this, Aaron Judge has hit a home run in five consecutive games. I think we tend to forget what exactly Judge is capable of due to his inability to stay on the field. The man is an absolute force at the plate and he can legitimately carry your entire fantasy team.

Since last season, Marcell Ozuna has driven in runs at an elite pace. His per-162 RBI numbers are over 110 since the beginning to 2019 and he’s already off to a solid start to 2020. As long as he can stay in the lineup, Ozuna will produce runs.

Off the list: Tim Anderson (injury), Lorenzo Cain (opted out), Jarrod Dyson

The Padres offense has performed pretty well in the early going, and it is due in large part to Tommy Pham. He has done it all hitting in both the three and four holes for the Friars so far and the fact that he still has had the green light hitting in those spots is huge for his fantasy value. The 32-year-old has already swiped five bags in his first 11 contests.

Speaking of the Padres, Trent Grisham is off to a hot start as well. He has shown some nice power and speed and has enough of a pedigree to warrant some attention in all mixed leagues.

Off the list: Yordan Alvarez

Even though Rhys Hoskins has only been able to play three games due to COVID-19 running rampant through the NL East, he already has a 7:1 walk to strikeout ratio. Hoskins led the league in walks a year ago and as long as he can keep his average around a respectable level, he will be a very solid source of OBP.

David Fletcher has already flashed his hit tool to us, but this year he has been walking a lot more. He currently has a 8:6 walk to strikeout ratio and a .458 OBP. Here’s to hoping this lasts because if so, Fletcher can be a very useful fantasy option.

The bulk of the movement here is due primarily to injuries. Coming off of his breakout in 2019, was hard to believe Shane Bieber could top it. Honestly, he has so far. The man has yet to allow a run over his first two starts, spanning 14 innings, and has two victories to show for it.

Despite the early struggles from the BoSox, Nathan Eovaldi has done a nice job through his first two starts. Eovaldi has put his team in position to win in both outings and has one win to show for it. Once this Red Sox lineup starts to click, the wins will come.

The inspiring story of Carlos Carrasco continues. “Cookie” has looked like the Carrasco of old so far through a pair of starts in 2020. If he is fully healthy and back to the pitcher he was from 2015-2018, he is a borderline ace.

With Roberto Osuna being sidelined for the foreseeable future, one would have to assume that Dusty Baker will appoint Ryan Pressly as defacto closer. Pressly has dealt with his own issues with a cut on his finger, but he appears to be over it. If you are an Osuna owner or are in need of saves, a speculative add of Pressly might not be a bad idea.

There is a much clearer picture this week. Cole Sulser has emerged as the favorite for saves in Baltimore it appears. While those saves will be few and far between, those in super deep leagues in need of saves should maybe give him a look.
