• All 30 teams were in action across Major League Baseball yesterday with the Mets and Marlins playing a double-header. 10 saves were recorded across the league on a busy day for relievers and closers. Check our depth charts below for any red flags before today’s contests.
• The most favorable opportunity to vulture a win today comes from the Chicago White Sox. Carlos Rodón is expected to start despite the soreness in his right arm bothering him in his last start on Sep 21. It was said that his bullpen session on Sunday was “just ok” and he only went three innings last time out. Michael Kopech is likely to be asked to pitch multiple innings in relief and is a great option to stream for the win.

 

Transaction Notes

 

• The New York Mets activated Noah Syndergaard from the 60-day injured list. The impending free agent looked solid across a perfect inning as he acted as an opener for Trevor Williams He struck out two and could pitch again before the end of the regular season.
• The Philadelphia Phillies activated Connor Brogdon from the 10-day injured list. The middle reliever returns to a 3.60 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 54 relief appearances and could work into hold situations once again.

 

• The Milwaukee Brewers placed Hunter Strickland on the paternity list and recalled Hoby Milner from Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds. The Astros also placed Kendall Graveman on the paternity list. Josh James was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land Skeeters.
• The Pittsburgh Pirates placed Connor Overton on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. Enyel De Los Santos will handle long relief duties until the end of the season and already picked up a win yesterday.

 

Yesterday’s Performances

 

• Notching his 36th save of the season in fortunate fashion, Will Smith escaped the ninth inning after he walked two and allowed an unearned run due to a fielding error by Eddie Rosario in the 2-1 win over the Phillies. It was the second time in two games that Smith has survived a dicey ninth inning, still, he has saves in each of his last three outings and seven in total through September.
• In the first game of the Mets and Marlins double-header, Edwin Díaz secured his 31st save of the campaign by striking out two of the three batters he faced in a clean ninth inning. The much-maligned closer has been much more consistent for the Mets this season and he currently boasts a decent 1.07 WHIP with 87 strikeouts across 61 2/3 innings through 2021.

 

• A less than convincing outing from Twins closer Alex Colomé still resulted in his 17th save of a Jekyll-and-Hyde campaign. Brought on in the ninth to preserve a 3-0 lead, Colomé allowed back-to-back, two-out RBI singles to allow the Tigers back to within one. Luckily, he struck out Robbie Grossman to get out of the jam. He has been a revelation in the last month of the season in terms of saves, however, the untrustworthy veteran is unlikely to earn a high-leverage role once again next season.
• Drew Steckenrider pitched his most important inning of the season as he recorded his 12th save in the 4-2 win over the A’s to bring the Mariners within a half a game of an American League Wildcard spot. Steckenrider allowed one hit but struck out two of the next three hitters and induced a flyout from Tony Kemp to end the game. The unheralded reliever has been an integral part of that impressive Mariners bullpen that has helped them win nine of their last 10 games, six of those coming against Oakland.

 

• Joe Barlow breezed past the Angels lineup in another impressive ninth inning in a Rangers uniform. Since taking over the closer role, Barlow has converted 10 of 11 opportunities and now supports a 1.61 ERA and tiny 0.86 WHIP across 28 frames with 26 Ks. A nice little bright spot for this torrid Texas team.
• Carlos Estevez recorded his first save since Sep 18 in the 3-1 Rockies win over the Nationals yesterday. The Rockies had lost seven of their nine games since then so it’s not like he has had many opportunities to be fair. It was his 10th save of the year.

 

• “The King of the Nastiest Pitches” in baseball, Dodgers setup man Blake Treinen survived a home run from Jake Cronenworth to notch his seventh save of the season. Closer Kenley Jansen was available out of the bullpen, however, manager Dave Roberts called on Treinen to close out the Padres after Walker Buehler pitched a beauty. When Ha-seong Kim stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position, things looked dicey but Tommy Pham could only fly out to hand the Dodgers the win.
• Cole Sulser once again assumed the closer position for the Orioles as Tyler Wells was shut down for the year. He pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save Tuesday against the Red Sox. It is the Orioles, though, so he might not see another opportunity before Sunday.

 

• The Giants gave rookie Camilo Doval the ball in the top of the ninth against the Diamondbacks for the opportunity to earn his first save of the 2021 season and the first of his MLB career. Doval allowed a double but got out of the frame scoreless. He has looked impressive of late and this was likely an audition for an increased role in the post-season. Exciting times for the young rookie amongst a veteran bullpen in San Francisco.
• Chris Stratton earned his seventh save of the year last night for the Pirates despite David Bednar being reinstated from the injured list. Bednar threw a scoreless eighth inning and it seems Stratton will get the nod the rest of the way.
