Schedule Notes

 

• Yesterday the Marlins and Mets finished up a game from April 11, then played out a regularly scheduled game. The Reds game with the Cardinals was washed out, but all other 28 teams were in action. It was a busy day for bullpens, so ensure you check the color coding on the chart below to manage your relievers for today’s fantasy matchups.
• The best opportunity to jump on a win today is with the Rays. Drew Rasmussen will again be asked to start, and despite going five innings last time out, he only threw 78 pitches. It is unlikely he will be so efficient again. The Rays are likely to call on veteran Collin McHugh first out of the pen after JT Chargois earned back-to-back wins out of the pen over the weekend. He could also be called upon, however, but my money is on McHugh. Both are a sneaky good play today.

 

Transaction and Injury Notes

 

• Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan was placed on the paternity list yesterday. Finnegan should miss the remainder of the series versus the Phillies, but he could be back in action in time for Friday’s opener against the Mets. Andres Machado and Ryne Harper could be in line for save opportunities in the coming days. Wander Suero was called up in a corresponding move.
• After losing Matt Barnes earlier in the week, the Red Sox placed Hirokazu Sawamura and Josh Taylor on the 10-day injured list yesterday. Newly acquired Brad Peacock has been called up, as has Stephen Gonsalves, who appeared in long relief yesterday. Garrett Richards is expected to move to a more high leverage role for the time being.

 

Yesterday’s Performances

 

• Yesterday the Marlins and Mets finished up a game from April 11, then played out a regularly scheduled game. In the first game, Anthony Bass, Richard Bleier, and Dylan Floro gave up five runs in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Mets the win. In the second game, the Mets used their high-leverage sequence of Aaron Loup, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Diaz to close out the game. It was Diaz’s 27th save of the season. The enigmatic closer now has eight straight scoreless appearances and has been clean in 13 of his last 14 outings.
• For the second night in a row, Angels closer Raisel Iglesias slammed the door shut on the Yankees to earn another save – he now has 29 on the year. Iglesias’ outing was almost a carbon copy of the night before; he struck out two in a scoreless inning and never gave the Yankees lineup a chance. He has been mightily impressive for the Angels and is likely to be a popular pick in early mock drafts for 2022.

 

• Liam Hendriks notched his 30th save of the season yesterday in a 4-2 win over the Pirates, allowing a hit to Kevin Newman before Hoy Park grounded into a double-play to end the game. Hendriks is hitting peak form at the right time and now boasts a 0.80 WHIP and 92/7 K/BB ratio across 57 1/3 frames.
• Kenley Jansen also recorded his 30th save of the year yesterday for the Dodgers, who won out 3-2 against Atlanta. After Corey Seager hit an RBI-double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Dodgers the lead, Jansen struck out Travis d’Arnaud and Dansby Swanson to whip through the inning at a canter. After a shaky July, Jansen has bounced back across August, allowing just a single run and going 8-for-8 in save opportunities since his meltdown against the Astros on Aug 5.

 

• The MLB leader in saves, Mark Melancon, has set the pace from the go and continued to keep his lead to six after nabbing his 36th save of the campaign yesterday. Despite allowing two hits, Melancon struck out three to keep the Diamondbacks off the board in the ninth inning. It is hard to see anyone catching him at this stage.
• Andrew Kittredge has been more productive in terms of wins than saves as a closer so far for the Rays. However, he now has three saves in his last three appearances and looks locked into the role. With an 8-3 lead going into the ninth, it seemed Kittredge wouldn’t be required. However, Dietrich Enns allowed four hitters to reach base giving up two runs and only punching out one. Kittredge made light work of Travis Shaw and Rafael Devers, striking both out to end the game and earn his fifth save of the year.

 

• In just his eighth appearance of the season after extended spells on the injured list, Cubs new closer Rowan Wick looked composed and sharp to earn his first save of the season. Protecting a 3-1 lead in the ninth inning against the Twins, Wick struck out Jake Cave and Ryan Jeffers in an impressive outing. He will see all save opportunities the rest of the way.
• Poor Cole Sulser! After the Orioles went over a month without a save opportunity, Sulser finally took the mound to convert his first opportunity since July 31. He did so in dominant fashion, retiring all three hitters he faced in a clean 1-2-3 inning. Good for you, Cole. However, the season could be over before he gets another chance!
