Today we will take look at the updated non-closer reliever market as there are some changes to the list since our previous installment. Keep in mind, just because a player is ranked below another player (especially when in the same tier), that doesn’t mean you need to rush to drop them for a higher ranked player. These rankings are mostly to be used on a tier by tier scale and apply towards the pitcher’s value for the rest of the season.
- Steve Cishek, A.J. Minter, Jordan Hicks, Pedro Strop, Jared Hughes and Chaz Roe were the biggest risers within the top 40. I think at this point, expect Minter and Hicks to stick around the top 20-25, even though both have been pretty volatile this season. The talent is there though that the good weeks will be worth dealing with the bad ones. The biggest fallers this past week were Alex Colome and Josh Fields. Colome will surely receive plenty of hold chances, just expect plenty of ups and downs in his performances.
- Kirby Yates was the only reliever on the list to notch 4 SV+HD’s this past week (3 holds, 1 save) as he continues his 2018 dominance. If Brad Hand were to get moved at the deadline and Yates stays put, he becomes an immediate must add in all formats.
Nothing on Ottavino? Word is he will be back sometime this week.
If he’s back today or guranteed this weekend he’ll be on tomorrow SV+HD list.
Should I drop Devenski for Yates or are they about the same? And should we trust Ottavino to pitch like he did before hitting the DL?
I face this same issue in a 12 team holds league and I’ve contemplated adding Devenski to a trade to increase a potential return with the ability to add Yates to compensate for dealing away Devenski. If your league counts holds, he’s still to valuable to just outright drop, even if the drop is to pick up someone pitching as well as Yates.
Agreed, but with Hader, Hand, and Britton, if I’m going to add Ottavino or Yates, seems like Devenski would be my drop, as much as I may not want to do that. He has no trade value in my league despite it being a SV/HLD league.
That seems like a lateral move to me. Yates isn’t so far and away a better option. Although I can understand why you’d want him to handcuff with Hand.
I am too sentimental towards Devo to just drop him. He helped me win a title last season (hat tip to his since-departed SP eligibility!)
The only issue I have with Devenski is potential usage in a crowded bullpen that will likely add a piece or two by August.
About the same, either guy is nice to have in holds formats. Hopin Ottavino is the same guy, but a little worried with his injury history plus oblique injuries can be tricky.
I would flip Robertson and Betances. Betances is clearly the 8th inning guy and he has fixed his previous issues and is back to his dominant self for the past 6 weeks. Also with Jordan Hicks adding strikeouts and a 50% K-BB% the last week, I’d give him a bump as well.

and that’s not including tonight where Betances picked up another hold and Robertson did not pitch (he pitched yesterday when NY was losing).
Yea thats a good call. I still worry about Betances and his extreme volatility the past two seasons, but when he’s going right he is basically unhittable. And the usage is starting to be more than just a recent trend.
Do you think Madson is worth dropping for Hildenberger? Madson has not been good since the first month. His age, injury, and Herrera’s arrival lead me to think his hold chances will not be there as much going forward.
Its close, but I still have Madson a a few spots higher this week, as he should still get more hold chances, even working the 7th inning.
