Today we will take look at the updated non-closer (committees included) reliever market as there are some changes to the list since our previous installment. Keep in mind, just because a player is ranked below another player (especially when in the same tier), that doesn’t mean you need to rush to drop them for a higher ranked player. These rankings are mostly to be used on a tier by tier scale and apply towards the pitcher’s value for the rest of the season.
- Tyler Clippard was the Blue Jays first option to close out a game following Roberto Osuna’s suspension, and he did so successfully Wednesday night. The tea leaves had started to lean towards Clippard as the interim closer, so Ryan Tepera and Seung Hwan-Oh will remain on this holds list until we see any semblance of a committee. John Axford gets a slight boost with the news, but just remember, it is John Axford.
- The Orioles lost their current closer as well just this yesterday, as Darren O’Day was placed on the DL with a hyperextended elbow. Brad Brach filled in on Wednesday night and earned his first save since April 11th. Mychal Givens and Richard Bleier get a nice boost from this, as both should be firmly entrenched in setup roles at least until O’Day and Zach Britton return.
- Leaving the list this week are Dominic Leone, Nick Goody, Adam Morgan, Danny Barnes and Alex Wilson, due to injuries placing them on the DL. Others falling off this week are Tyler Olson, Sergio Romo, Paul Sewald, Sam Dyson, Will Smith, Kyle Crick and Dan Otero. Tyler Clippard was also removed due to his current status as Blue Jays (supposed) closer.
- Leading the week in holds with 3 were Archie Bradley, Tommy Hunter and Edubray Ramos. That Phillies bullpen has a ton a quality arms, especially with the additions of young guys like Victor Arano (on the DL at the moment) and Seranthony Dominguez.
How legit is Jose Alvarado at this age? Any chance he converts to SP?
He’s definitely legit as a reliever, but I don’t see him transitioning back to a starter anytime soon. He hasn’t started games since 2015 and he probably has more value to the Rays as a late inning reliever.
Gohara has not pitched yet, but do you expect him to be used where he can get a fair amount of holds. I had him stashed and was planning on cutting him, but I play in. S+H league and he qualifies as a SP, which would be of value to me if he can generate holds and can pitch well with K upside. Thx
I don’t see him being an asset in the holds department, but he could help K’s and potential ERA/WHIP. I think we see him starting some point soon though.
While I do believe Betances will come back into form, I don’t understand how he can continue to be ranked top 30 when Boone is simply not putting him into Hold situations. They’re consistly going to Green and even Shreve and occasionally Holder ahead of him, and while the Ks are great, his Net Holds of 1 on the year makes him nearly droppable.
I get it, but I feel like he’s still someone to own if you are in a deep holds league. It’s tough giving up on a guy like Betances because you don’t want to regret dropping that upside if he figures it out. He just turned 30 a month ago and his stuff still looks dominant at times, but maybe he needs a trade out of NY to regain value. I’d still rather chase him than a lot of other options out there who may get me a hold or two a week.
Would you value Alvarado or Daniel Robertson as more valuable to the Rays as a long term asset?
