Injury Report: March 17th, 2018

The March 17th edition of the Injury Report.

Hello and welcome!

This edition of the Injury Report has seen some evolutions:

  • Added R and L wherever available to denote Right and Left.
  • Added (1), (2), or (3) to denote the Grade of strains and sprains where available.
  • Changed the date format to help to reduce clutter inside the table.
  • Improved my use of alphabetical ordering.

We’ve seen the following players leave the report due to returning to play or no longer being a part of the MLB roster:

Socrates Brito, Brock Holt, Gregory Infante, Eloy Jimenez, Gerardo ParraAdalberto MondesiAndrelton SimmonsJefry MarteAustin BarnesLogan MorrisonEddie RosarioJacob deGromAmed RosarioMatt ChapmanJoe MusgroveMitch HanigerNick VincentMark MelanconTony ZychBuster Posey, and Matt Carpenter.

We also saw quite a few players join the table. Each new player has a small blurb describing their injury and a projected timetable for return. Updates are also posted where available. Let’s check out the table:

UPDATES

Randall Delgado (RP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Delgado has experienced tightness in his oblique thus far during spring training. Look for him to join the DBacks about a month into the season.

Shelby Miller (SP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Threw his first bullpen of 2018. Maintaining the same pace, should return in late-June or early-July.

Luiz Gohara (SP, Atlanta Braves) – Gohara has been shut down for two weeks. The Braves aren’t expecting Gohara to be ready prior to May, so I’ve moved his ETA back a little. Hopefully he feels fine in two weeks and can get back to throwing.

Zach Britton (RP, Baltimore Orioles) – Britton gets the walking boot off this weekend, and remains on course for his current timeline.

Chris Davis (1B, Baltimore Orioles) – No Birthday Bomb for Davis as the Orioles are reportedly going to hold him out of the lineup on Saturday. Expect to see him on the field on Sunday.

Mark Trumbo (DH, Baltimore Orioles) – Trumbo recieved an MRI on 3-15-18 which revealed a Grade 2 quad strain. He should rejoin the Baltimore line-up in mid-April.

Drew Pomeranz (SP, Boston Red Sox) – Pomeranz threw a two inning bullpen session on 3-15-18 and is hopeful to return the first week of the 2018 season.

Eduardo Rodriguez (SP, Boston Red Sox) – Set to throw in a game next week. Stated: “I just feel way better now, I feel like my kneecap isn’t going to pop out anymore. That’s a good thing, because I feel comfortable now.”

Steven Wright (SP, Boston Red Sox) – Slated to throw three innings of live BP on 3-17-18.

Javier Baez (2B, Chicago Cubs) – MRI came back clean, and Baez is ready to test the hamstring on 3-17-18. Hopefully all is well and it was just some tightness that he’s been able to work through.

Pedro Strop (RP, Chicago Cubs) – Strop continues to not be concerned. He may get into action within a week.

Michael Brantley (OF, Cleveland Indians) – Brantley has been doing outfield drills. I think an early-May return is still reasonable.

Danny Salazar (SP/RP, Cleveland Indians) – Salazar is now up to 130ft. This still feels extremely slow to me. He’s going to be on the DL to start 2018. I’m starting to wonder just how long it will be and if it makes more sense that he return out of the bullpen.

Jandel Gustave (RP, Houston Astros) – Slated to throw off a mound in late March, which should have him on pace for a return in August.

Brady Rodgers (SP, Houston Astros) – Threw off a mound on 3-13-18. Likely to return in July at this point.

Chris Young (OF, Los Angeles Angels) – Has taken at-bats in intrasquad games. Should make his Cactus League debut next week.

Martin Prado (INF, Miami Marlins) – Martin Prado suffered a setback during running drills and is no longer atinicipated to be ready for Opening Day. I’m setting his timetable to 5-1-18 for now, but that is pending further updates.

J.T. Realmuto (C, Miami Marlins) – From a knee to a back, Realmuto is getting battered and bruised. He should be fine and ready for Opening Day.

Zach Davies (SP, Milwaukee Brewers) – Davies threw 3 innings in an intrasquad game and is slated to return to Cactus League play on 3-17-18.

Michael Conforto (OF, New York Mets) – Conforto has begun shagging flyballs and taking batting practice. Recent news has him ahead of his May 1st timetable, though I don’t see the need to rush the 25 year old – the nature of his injury was complex. Conforto will reportedly have four at-bats in a minor league game on 3-16-18. I’m going to hold with my timetable of 5-1-18.

David Wright (3B, New York Mets) – I got tired of bullying Wright. He will not resume baseball activities for at least 8 weeks, so I’ve drawn up a rough timetable based on that information and his extensive injury history. It is very likely that we don’t see Wright on the field in 2018.

Clint Frazier (OF, New York Yankees) – Frazier is experiencing continued concussion symptoms and it can be considered a major issue at this point. This is kind of a ‘wait and see’ scenario as Frazier will not move forward until ready.

Ryan Dull (RP, Oakland Athletics) – Threw a 20-pitch bullpen on 3-13-18. No issues were noted, but he still has a bit of throwing to do to be prepared for 2018. I’m giving him two weeks off to start the season and monitoring for additional news.

Ryon Healy (DH, Seattle Mariners) – Healy is expected to make his Cactus League debut this weekend.

Luke Gregerson (RP, St. Louis Cardinals) – Facing live hitters on 3-16-18. Should see game action shortly after if all goes well.

Brad Miller (2B, Tampa Bay Rays) – Expected to return to play on 3-17-18. It seems early, but it looks like he may be ready for Opening Day.

Martin Perez (SP, Texas Rangers) – Expected to make Cactus League debut on 3-18-18. Threw 75 pitches in a minor league game, so he appears to be right on track. It’s hard to fathom him missing more than a week to start 2018.

Marcus Stroman (SP, Toronto Blue Jays) – Stroman is scheduled to throw on 3-17-18. He remains on pace to return in mid-April.

Adam Eaton (OF, Washington Nationals) – Eaton is expected to be in the lineup on 3-17-18. He has taken approximately 60 at-bats in spring games and has played the outfield. He figures to be ready for Opening Day barring any setbacks.

Michael Taylor (OF, Washington Nationals) – Taylor is set to return to play on 3-17-18.

ADDITIONS

Zack Greinke (SP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Greinke’s groin injury appears to be mild, but there is no sense in rushing the ace back. This doesn’t change Greinke’s outlook for 2018 for me – he’s still a top 15 SP.

Johan Camargo (3B, Atlanta Braves) – Will be held out of action for the remainder of the week but is expected to be ready to start the 2018 season.

Ender Inciarte (OF, Atlanta Braves) – Expect to see Ender enter the lineup this weekend. Sounds mild enough that he would have played through it if this were the regular season.

Nick Delmonico (OF, Chicago White Sox) – MRI came back clean, and Delomonico has felt fine hitting off a tee. Slated to return to play on 3-16-18.

Tyler Saladino (2B, Chicago White Sox) – Concussions suck, but the Saladman has returned to workouts and should be ready to start the 2018 season. He may get in a game this weekend.

Anthony DeSclafani (SP, Cincinnati Reds) – No official timetable is available, but Tony Disco will almost certainly start 2018 on the DL. I’m guessing it’s a Grade 2 strain, so I’ve updated his timetable to reflect that. If we come to hear that it was Grade 1, he may be back in April.

Brandon Finnegan (SP, Cincinnati Reds) – Sounds mild enough that Finnegan should be ready to start 2018. Look for him at the back end of the Reds’ rotation.

Scooter Gennett (2B, Cincinnati Reds) – Doesn’t appear to be serious, so I’m giving him a week or so to rest and return to play unless we hear anything else.

Tom  Murphy (C, Colorado Rockies) – Murphy took a backswing off the helmet. He’ll get a few days off before returning action next week.

Paulo Orlando (OF, Kansas City Royals) – Orlando should be ready for Opening Day.

Magneuris Sierra (OF, Miami Marlins) – Tightness should resolve and allow Sierra to be ready for Opening Day unless we end up finding out he’s got a strain. Either way, the 21 year old isn’t likely to begin 2018 with the Marlins.

Ehire Adrianza (SS, Minnesota Twins) – Should be set for Opening Day without setback.

Miguel Sano (3B, Minnesota Twins) – Scratched from the line-up on 3-16-18. Should be considered minor until we hear otherwise. If nothing changes, he should only miss a game or so.

Yoenis Cespedes (OF, New York Mets) – X-Rays came back negative and Cespedes received a cortisone injection to relieve pain and inflammation. Wrist injuries are tricky (and fractures are not always visible on X-ray) since the carpal bones are held together so tightly by ligaments. I’m going to remain cautious until more news is available. His timetable of 3-29-18 reflects a scenario without any further complications. Cespedes expects to play Sunday or Monday, we should have a better idea then.

Jharel Cotton (SP, Oakland Athletics) – Cotton is seaking a second opinion on his sprained elbow UCL. Timetable could vary wildly depending on the course of treatment. I’ve penciled him in for conservative treatment of a Grade 2 sprain, but he’ll be automatically moved to 12-18 months if he elects for Tommy John surgery.

Jerad Eickhoff (SP, Philadelphia Phillies) – Rotten luck. Eickhoff will be shut down from throwing for a couple of weeks. Hopefully he has a speedy and effective rehab.

Nelson Cruz (DH, Seattle Mariners) – With rest and no setbacks Cruz may be ready for Opening Day.

Andrew Romine (UTL, Seattle Mariners) – Romine should only need a few days off.

Ichiro Suzuki (OF, Seattle Mariners) – Ichiro should return to play within a few days.

Clayton Blackburn (SP, Texas Rangers) – Timetable of 4-6 weeks has been reported which makes me think it’s a very mild sprain. If he doesn’t take to conservative treatment, Tommy John is always looming. Either way, it’s the wrong Clayton! Sorry, I’ve always wanted to do that.

Anthony Alford (OF, Toronto Blue Jays) – Alford was unlikely to start 2018 with the Jays anyway, but it’s tough to see him endure yet another injury.

Dalton Pompey (OF, Toronto Blue Jays) – Appears to be a soft-tissue injury to Pompey’s right wrist, though it is concerning that reduced grip strength has been noted as well. Pompey was not likely to start 2018 in the MLB, and this will not help his chances.

Randal Grichuk (OF, Toronto Blue Jays) – Seems odd to call it a ‘rib cage issue’. I expect grichuk to return to play next week if his condition is as mild as reported.

Justin Smoak (1B, Toronto Blue Jays) – Reportedly mild, and Smoak is expected to return to the lineup on 3-17-18.
