Injury Report 7/5: Every Player’s DL Situation

Hello and welcome!

The following players have returned to regular play or have been optioned and have been removed from the report: A.J. Pollock, Arodys Vizcaino, Anibal Sanchez, Colby Rasmus, Tyler Thornburg, Albert Almora, Leury Garcia, Alex Wilson, Joe Smith, George Springer, Garrett Richards, Jose Urena, Christian Yelich, Byron Buxton, Bobby Wilson, A.J. Cole, Austin Romine, Matt Chapman, Enny Romero, Pablo Sandoval, Ronald Guzman, and Matt Adams.

Additionally, Shoehei Ohtani came off the DL to fulfill a DH role. I’m still not optimistic that Ohtani will return to the mound this year as we wait for further information from the Angels.

Let’s check out the table:

Steve Wilkerson (3B, Baltimore Orioles) – Wilkerson has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 Oblique strain and will miss an extended period.

Danny Salazar (SP, Cleveland Indians) – Salazar will be shut down from throwing for about 3-4 months, effectively ending his season. I’ve slated him to be ready for 2019, though that is not at all a certainty.

Chad Bettis (SP, Colorado Rockies) – Betts hit the DL though he should be available prior to the ASB or shortly after it.

Noah Syndergaard (SP, New York Mets) – Syndergaard lines up to throw on 7-13-18 or for a return shortly after the ASB depending how his upcoming rehab appearance goes.

Jarrod Dyson (OF, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Dyson will undergo diagnostic testing which will help to inform our timetable. I’ve listed him as DTD for now, presuming no bad news. He may be able to return this weekend or for the first half of next week if this is merely tightness or a very minor strain.

Freddie Freeman (3B, Atlanta Braves) – No concerns here – Freeman may play Thursday.

Peter Moylan (RP, Atlanta Braves) – I presume Moylan will undergo imagining which may alter his timetable. I haven’t found any MRI reports as of yet. He will be shut down from throwing for an extended period.

Mitch Moreland (1B, Boston Red Sox) – Moreland left Tuesday’s game with back spasms and did not start on Wednesday – not shocking as it was an 11am game. Moreland may be able to return in time for the Sox next game on Friday.

Brandon Guyer (OF, Cleveland Indians) – X-rays came back negative. Guyer is dealing with a knee contusion and doesn’t figure to miss too much time.

Lonnie Chisenhall (OF, Cleveland Indians) – Chisenhall is heading back to the DL, this time straining his left calf. He missed approximately two months earlier this season due to a strained right calf so I’m taking that as our precedent as no degree of strain has been reported.

Shane Greene (RP, Detroit Tigers) – Greene is undergoing an MRI on his right shoulder on Thursday. Updates should be available prior to the weekend, and may drastically alter his timetable.

Max Stassi (C, Houston Astros) – X-rays came back negative, and Stassi is expected to return shortly.

Brian McCann (C, Houston Astros) – McCann underwent an operation this week though I can’t find a report explicitly stating the nature of the procedure. We know that it was arthroscopic, which generally pertains to a quicker return to play comparable to open procedures. The Astros have provided a timetable of 4-6 weeks so we’ll run with that for now.

Ian Kennedy (SP, Kansas City Royals) – Kennedy was placed on the DL due to an oblique strain in a retroactive move. The Royals feel that he will be able to return after missing only one start, though this seems optimistic. I’ve listed that scenario as his estimated return date, but don’t be surprised if he lingers on the DL a bit longer.

Mike Moustakas (3B, Kansas City Royals) – This appears minor and Moustakas may be able to return prior to this weekend.

Rich Hill (SP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Hill is DTD for now and is expected to make his next scheduled start. He may end up on the DL10 – I’d expect that move to come over the weekend if that’s the case.

Walker Buehler (SP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Buehler is back on the DL and will make at least two outings in his current rehab assignment. He may return on or around 7-13-18, though I feel a return just after the All-Star Break is more likely.

Tyler Skaggs (SP, Los Angeles Angels) – Skaggs is hoping to only miss one start with this groin injury. Due to the proximity to the ASB, it may make sense to hold him out until after the break.

Chris Young (OF, Los Angeles Angels) – Young hit the DL due to a hamstring strain of uknown grade and figures to miss an extended period.

Lewis Brinson (OF, Miami Marlins) – I’ve listed Brinson as 2-4 weeks which reflects a scenario where he is able to work through the inflammation he is experiencing without issue. It is difficult at this time to bank on this scenario as we don’t know the cause of the inflammation. I presume additional diagnostic testing will be completed.

Sandy Alcantara (SP, Miami Marlins) – Alcantara is dealing with some discomfort/infection of his right armpit area and will likely be out until after the All-Star Break.

Ehire Adrianza (SS, Minnesota Twins) – I’ve listed Adrianza with a timetable reflecting a minor hamstring strain though no degree of strain has been reported and additional information is required.

Devin Mesoraco (C, New York Mets) – Mesoraco passed concussion protocol and should return to the Mets lineup by this weekend.

Gleyber Torres (2B, New York Yankees) – Torres is battling a minor hip strain. I presume he will be out past the All-Star Break and perhaps a bit longer depending on how he responds to conservative treatments.

Zach Eflin (SP, Philadelphia Phillies) – Eflin expects to make his next scheduled start.

Joe Musgrove (SP, Pittsburgh Pirates) – I don’t anticipate this will hold Musgrove out for long and he will likely make one more start prior to the ASB.

Vidal Nuno (RP, Tampa Bay Rays) – No degree of strain has been provided. I’ve listed Nuno as being able to return after the ASB and we will adjust as additional information is available.

Adrian Beltre (3B, Texas Rangers) – Beltre had a root canal performed on an infected tooth. He may be able to return prior to this weekend.

Tony Barnette (RP, Texas Rangers) – I’ve seen this injury reported as both a lat strain and a shoulder strain. Either way, Barnette will reportedly be shut down from throwing for about 4 weeks and will likely return in mid-August at the earliest.

Marco Estrada (SP, Toronto Blue Jays) – I presume Estrada will head the to DL though no official move has been made at this time. This strain is being reported as mild, but so was a similar injury to Joey Lucchesi. Lucchesi spent 35 days on the DL.

Erick Fedde (SP, Washington Nationals) – A DL move is likely coming, which will hold Fedde out until after the ASB. How long after will depend on the amount of time he abstains from throwing.

Would you drop Ohtani the pitcher in Y! leagues? Since he’s off the DL, I need to do something with him in order to make other roster moves. I’d hate to drop him if he’s going to pitch again this year… but time is running out and even if he does come back, will he be unleashed?

Jeff Davis

Hi Ryan,

That will ultimately depend on league settings/standings/waiver wire quality etc. I presume we will get another update during the All-Star Break or shortly thereafter which will tell us if Ohtani will throw again this year. While it seems like he has responded positively to the PRP injection you’ve got to factor in the amount of time he will take to build his arm strength again – likely more than a month if he is to return to the rotation.

I may be one of the few to hold this opinion, but if he doesn’t respond well to the PRP it may be worthwhile to have him pitch anyway. If the PRP doesn’t take he is looking at getting Tommy John in the offseason. If he keeps pitching at that point and ends up tearing the ligament he is still slated for Tommy John – the outlook is entirely the same. The risk here is that you lose him as a hitter if he completely tears his UCL. I don’t feel this scenario is a high probability, but it is something the Angels can consider.

Ultimately I’d select some of the guys available to you on the wire and ask Nick during today’s Reddit AMA who he’d recommend. From there it’s up to you whether you can wait a few weeks for additional (and potentially not good) news.

Best of luck!

Jeff Davis

Hi Adrian,

Nothing at the moment. Nelson has yet to throw off a mound but he still has time to get going and make an impact for your team down the stretch. I’ll start worrying if he doesn’t throw off a mound this month.

I’m stashing him in a league as well, and I’m really just playing the waiting game. There are strong odds that I can add him to my staff in the few weeks prior to playoffs and have him contribute for the playoff run.

Thanks for the question!
