UPDATES

Avisail Garcia (OF, Chicago White Sox) – Garcia hit the DL and figures to miss a substantial period of time.

Miguel Gonzalez (SP, Chicago White Sox) – Gonzalez underwent a shoulder operation which will end his 2018 season.

Shane Greene (RP, Detroit Tigers) – Greene is set to return on Friday, which seems ridiculously early.

Ian Kennedy (SP, Kansas City Royals) – Kennedy spent the minimum on the DL (which I had said seemed optimistic) and ended up back on the DL immediately. The Royals should allow him more than the minimum stay this time…

ADDITIONS

T.J. McFarland (RP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – McFarland is DTD for now, though it may make a lot of sense to put him on the DL as he would be eligible to return right after the ASB.

Shelby Miller (SP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – I presume Miller will hit the DL after undergoing additional testing prior to this weekend. This could be serious, but we’ll wait for the MRI to be sure. Given he is recently coming off TJ he may be shut down from throwing for a while even if the MRI comes back negative.

Andrew Cashner (SP, Baltimore Orioles) – Cashner has dealt with a similar issue in the past (22 days in 2016 and 5 days in 2017). He received a cortisone shot and should be set to return after the ASB.

Jace Peterson (3B, Baltimore Orioles) – Peterson is dealing with a contusion and has been a defensive sub since his injury. He should return to regular play prior to the weekend.

Josh Tomlin (RP, Cleveland Indians) – No degree of strain has been reported, and his timetable could quickly increase if we’re dealing with anything beyond a Grade 1 strain. Cleveland may also take things slowly with Tomlin, who has been relatively ineffective this season.

Jose Iglesias (SS, Detroit Tigers) – This doesn’t appear serious, and Iglesias should return shortly.

Marwin Gonzalez (OF, Houston Astros) – Gonzalez was spiked on Tuesday. He should not miss much more than a day or two.

Garrett Richards (SP, Los Angeles Angels) – Richards opted for conservative treatment when previously diagnosed with a UCL sprain. We can infer that he isn’t dealing with a Grade 3 sprain at the moment as he is seeking additional opinions. I suspect that his 2018 is over either way, but Tommy John surgery will be the ticket and Richards will miss a significant portion of 2019 as well. We should know in the coming days. The Angels seem to opt for this conservative treatment which hasn’t worked out too consistently to this point (Richards, Ramirez). It brings further questions to their approach with Shohei Ohtani (who will be reevaluated on July 19th).

Drew Rucinski (RP, Miami Marlins) – I’ve given Rucinski a modest timetable as no degree of strain has been reported at this time.

Addison Reed (RP, Minnesota Twins) – Reed’s injury was originally described as triceps tendinitis, though further testing revealed an elbow impingement (due to the inclusion of the triceps in the initial diagnosis I’m guessing it’s a posterior impingement). Reed will likely receive a cortisone shot and be shut down from throwing for a few weeks. As this impingement was diagnosed via MRI and not X-ray, I don’t believe Reed will require surgical intervention.

Todd Frazier (OF, New York Mets) – This will likely be more than a minimum stay, though it will depend on the severity of the strain which hasn’t been reported. Monitor for updates for when Frazier returns to baseball activities.

Stephen Piscotty (OF, Oakland Athletics) – This appears to be a contusion, though I don’t believe imaging has been completed. If Piscotty is sore it may make sense to put him on the DL given our proximity to the ASB.

Felix Hernandez (SP, Seattle Mariners) – From the sound of things Hernandez was dealing with back soreness through his last couple of starts and this DL move during the All-Star Break has been planned for a while. He should be set to return after the break.

Deline DeShields (OF, Texas Rangers) –  I’ve slotted DeShields as DTD, though he could miss more time if he does not pass concussion protocol. We should get an update on Thursday.

Hey, Jeff!

Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports was quoted earlier in the week as stating that the White Sox are expecting Avisail Garcia back right after the ASB. Did something new happen with his hammy diagnosis?

Jeff Davis

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for sharing that – I missed this information!

I don’t have anything that hasn’t been reported, but I think I was rightfully skeptical when hearing that Garcia re-injured the same hamstring that kept him out for 2 months earlier this year. A below commenter mentioned that it was a different hamstring muscle, though that doesn’t entirely quell my concerns. Garcia dealing with an issue with one of the muscles in the hamstring group could certainly cause additional stress to the other muscles in the group… and at this point, he’s at least dealt with difficulties with two of the three muscles. All reports do indicate the White Sox expect him to return shortly after the ASB, though I need to build in a certain level of pessimism. Even if he matches that return date, the probability of additional injury to this hamstring is much higher than normal.

Hope this has helped, and thank you for reading!

Marcus

Jeff –
My DL list is overflowing. I’ve tried trading Josh Donaldson for mid-tier players but no bites. Is it time to cut him loose?

Jeff Davis

Hi Marcus,

That decision is going to come down to league situation factors – e.g. standings, who is available on the wire, etc.

I would caution that while Donaldson has been a major point of frustration this season he appears to be trending in the right direction (has begun running and general baseball activities) and returned from a calf injury last year to a similar level of success that you would expect of the former MVP (9 HR in the first half last year, 24 in the second half of the season).

Ultimately I would prepare your league info and some potential waiver wire names and run it by Nick during Friday’s Reddit AMA!

Kevin

Wow, where did you get your A. Garcia info? Like Kyle said above – considered mild. Grade 1 strain in a different part of the hamstring. Expected back right after the ASB. Obviously, this could all be a smoke screen to not scare away trading partners. Important to know how solid you are on your 8/15 info? If that’s the case, might be droppable in 10 teamer.

Jeff Davis

Hi Kevin,

I did miss that report from Daryl Van Schouwen – sorry!

If I’m making a prediction with this information in hand it is that Garcia returns shortly after the ASB though this isn’t the last we hear of his hamstring issues this season.

I responded in greater depth to Kyle above – feel free to join that thread with any additional questions or comments!
