UPDATES

Mookie Betts (OF, Boston Red Sox) – This appears to be a mild strain, and Betts is participating in baseball activities. A return when first eligible appears likely.

David Dahl (OF, Colorado Rockies) – Dahl hit the DL as he was found to have fractured a bone in his foot. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Joe Mauer (1B, Minnesota Twins) – Mauer suffered a setback with renewed concussion symptoms. He will likely be pushed back about a week.

Josh Donaldson (3B, Toronto Blue Jays) – Donaldson is anticipating a return when first eligible on Friday, though he is still symptomatic at this time. He has been going through hitting drills.

ADDITIONS

Jorge De La Rosa (RP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – I’ve listed De La Rosa with the rough timetable for a mild case of bursitis of 2-4 weeks. I’m on the long end of that since this is De La Rosa’s landing leg. If we find that this isn’t mild surgery is an option which could have him out for an additional month or two.

Dustin Pedroia (2B, Boston Red Sox) – I’ve got Pedroia listed for his earliest possible return date until we see how he’s progressing. He may end up needing more than the minimum stay, but I don’t think we should be too worried at this point.

Addison Russell (SS, Chicago Cubs) – Russell isn’t expected to require a DL stint, as this sounds like a minor sprain.

Homer Bailey (SP, Cincinnati Reds) – Bailey hit the DL with knee inflammation after a rough beginning to his 2018 season. The Reds may be patient with him to see if he can get back on track.

James McCann (C, Detroit Tigers) – As long as we’re sticking to the spasm, we’re doing okay. If we begin hearing that McCann is dealing with a strain, expect a DL stint.

Ryan Carpenter (SP, Detroit Tigers) – Carpenter was up for a spot start and left early with a front-side oblique strain. This will likely hold him out for over a month.

Marwin Gonzalez (OF, Houston Astros) – Gonzalez isn’t expected to require a DL stint and should return in the first half of this week.

Kole Calhoun (OF, Los Angeles Angels) – The retroactive DL move makes me think the Angels don’t believe this to be serious, but I can’t find a grade of strain. Keep in mind that this is the oblique that is stressed most during both swinging and throwing for Calhoun. This may have the largest ramifications for Angels pitchers as most of Calhoun’s value this year has come from his glove.

Nick Wittgren (RP, Miami Marlins) – MLB Transaction tracker states this was a 7-day DL move but that doesn’t seem appropriate. Regardless, Wittgren is likely to return when first eligible.

Mitch Garver (C, Minnesota Twins) – Garver is likely to return on Tuesday.

Zach Davies (SP, Milwaukee Brewers) – The Brewers made a retroactive DL move here, but I suspect Davies may stay on the DL a bit longer. It all depends on when he resumes throwing, so we’ll look for that information.

Devin Mesoraco (C, New York Mets) – Mesoraco is expected to return on Tuesday.

Daniel Gossett (SP, Oakland Athletics) – Gossett is DTD for now, but this could quickly evolve into a DL stint. Look for MRI results in the first half of this week.

Matt Joyce (OF, Oakland Athletics) – The current expectation is that Joyce will be ready to play by Wednesday, his next projected platoon start.

Christian Villanueva (3B, San Diego Padres) – Villanueva is considered DTD with a left ankle contusion. He is currently expected to return in this first half of this week.

Brandon Belt (1B, San Francisco Giants) – Appendectomies are harder on left-handers as the appendix is located on the lower right side of the abdomen and both layers of obliques need to be split to reach it. The best comp we have is Heyward (L/L) in 2013 who missed just over three weeks.

Alex Reyes (SP, St. Louis Cardinals) – It sounds as though Reyes has a Grade 2 lat strain, which will likely hold him out until the second half. The key estimating his return date will be seeing once he returns to throwing. The Cards will likely take it slow with the 23-year-old, and he may return out of the bullpen once able.

C.J. Cron (1B, Tampa Bay Rays) – X-rays came back negative. Cron is expected to return to the lineup in the early half of this week.

Chris Archer (SP, Tampa Bay Rays) – There is talk of Archer missing his next start. We should know by early this week. A DL stint may make sense.

Teoscar Hernandez (OF, Toronto Blue Jays) – Hernandez is likely to return by the middle of this week. X-rays came back negative.

Jeremy Hellickson (SP, Washington Nationals) – I am guessing that Hellickson strained his hamstring and a DL move will be completed. We will likely know prior to Tuesday.

Matt Adams (1B, Washington Nationals) – No X-rays have been reported, so I presume Adams is fine and should return by the middle of this week.

J.D. Martinez (DH, Boston Red Sox) – J.D. Martinez left Sunday’s game prior to his 9th inning at-bat and was later seen talking to a trainer and point to his back. There’s no indication that this should keep him out for more than a couple of days if any at all.

Hey, Jeff!

Thanks for the hard work you put into this column.

What do you make of the reports that came out over the weekend that Daniel Murphy is looking “gimpy” and has a hitch in his gate? Is his micro-fracture recovery the sort of thing that could jeopardize his 2018, or is this just the Nationals being conservative?

Jeff Davis

Hi Kyle,

I admit I’m concerned, though not surprised. I’m not entirely sure how long this will set him back, and there is a risk that his 2018 is in jeopardy. We’ve seen Pedroia head back to the DL with continued issues, so perhaps they’re both just pushing it too hard too fast. With that said, this is also an atypical procedure, and some studies list mixed results (as low as 70% success rate).

I think right now all we can do is continue to monitor and remain optimistic that his condition will improve over time. It’s not an enviable place to be in as a fantasy owner, but hopefully he returns at some point and makes the gamble worthwhile.

Thanks for the question and for the kind words!
