Kenta Maeda (SP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Maeda is set to throw a bullpen this week, and may start on Wednesday if all goes well.

Yoenis Cespedes (OF, New York Mets) – Cespedes re-aggravated his quad injury, and has returned to Florida to restart the rehab process.

Noah Syndergaard (SP, New York Mets) – Syndergaard dealt with some inflammation in his injured finger during a recent throwing session which robbed us of Thor vs. Severino on Sunday night. Darn. He is hoping to return at the end of this week.

Daniel Murphy (2B, Washington Nationals) – The Nats are about to play a series of road interleague games, and Murphy may make sense as a DH if he is able.

ADDITIONS

Danny Valencia (3B, Baltimore Orioles) – Valencia came down with an illness which kept him out of Sunday’s game. He should be fine within a few days.

Roberto Perez (C, Cleveland Indians) – Perez was hit on the ulnar side of his right hand. Initial X-rays came back negative, but the Indians are seeking a second opinion from a hand specialist. This could be a case where Perez has a fractured carpal bone and ends up missing between 4-6 weeks.

Jason Kipnis (2B, Cleveland Indians) – This is reportedly a minor concern, and Kipnis is likely to return to the lineup by the middle of next week.

Edwin Encarnacion (1B, Cleveland Indians) – Much like Kipnis, Edwin is dealing with a minor injury and should return to the lineup quickly.

Scott Oberg (RP, Colorado Rockies) – No degree of strain is available at the present moment.

Carlos Gonzalez (OF, Colorado Rockies) – I’ve seen this injury reported as both back spasms and a rib issue. CarGo saw a chiropractor and states that he’s feeling much better. He expects to be in the lineup on Tuesday.

Mike Dunn (RP, Colorado Rockies) – Whether rhomboid major or minor, Dunn is likely not dealing with a grade 3 strain. He is set to undergo an MRI in a few days.

Adam Engel (OF, Chicago White Sox) – Engel is battling some discomfort in his right hamstring. If this persists for much longer a DL stint may be warranted.

Joe Smith (RP, Houston Astros) – Smith is battling some elbow discomfort. To my knowledge, no diagnostic tests have been reported. We will have a better sense of things once diagnostic results are reported or Smith resumes throwing.

Carlos Correa (SS, Houston Astros) – Correa is aiming to return on Tuesday. The right oblique is the preferred side for a right-handed thrower and swinger. MRI results came back clean.

Jorge Soler (SS, Kansas City Royals) – Soler expects to return to the lineup on Tuesday.

Justin Turner (3B, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Turner has been battling some residual soreness in his previously fractured left wrist. This isn’t likely to be anything serious, and the Dodgers expect him to be in the lineup on Tuesday, but Turner may continue to need the occasional day of rest.

Dennis Santana (RP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Santana’s injury was reported as both a lat tear as well as a rotator cuff tear. It’s unclear if he has comorbid injuries, or if it was reported incorrectly at some point. Either way, his 2018 is likely done.

Walker Buehler (SP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Some reports have linked Buehler’s rib injury to a line drive off the bat of Trevor Story on May 21st. I expect Buehler to miss a start – the Dodgers can skip a start via the DL10 if they make a retroactive move on Monday.

Tony Cingrani (RP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Cingrani is currently expected to miss the minimum, though that seems optimistic. Monitor for continued updates, but the earliest he is able to return is 6-17-18.

Kaleb Cowart (3B, Los Angeles Angels) – I’m not able to find a degree of sprain, but Cowart will likely be demoted once he returns.

Shohei Ohtani (SP, Los Angeles Angels) – I’m having trouble understanding the Angels’ logic here unless this is anything other than a very minor Grade 2 sprain. They’ve had poor results with PRP treatment of Grade 2 sprains in the past, and either way, Ohtani isn’t likely to return to the mound this year. I suppose there is a chance that the Angels are hopeful to get him healthy enough to hit and worry about pitching later. The current plan is to re-evaluate Ohtani in 3 weeks. I would not be shocked to hear it’s TJ time at that point.

Jeurys Familia (RP, New York Mets) – Familia is reportedly heading out on a rehab assignment already, so this doesn’t appear to be a long absence.

Masahiro Tanaka (SP, New York Yankees) – Tanaka strained both of his hamstrings running the bases. He will likely be able to return around the beginning of July.

Dylan Cozens (OF, Philadelphia Phillies) – This sounds like a minor strain, and Cozens may be ready to return when first eligible.

Francisco Cervelli (C, Pittsburgh Pirates) – Initial reports suggest that Cervelli dodged a concussion. He may be ready to return on Tuesday.

Richard Rodriguez (RP, Pittsburgh Pirates) – It’s unclear how serious this issue is, but Rodriguez may be able to return when first eligible.

Dan Altavilla (RP, Seattle Mariners) – A flexor strain is preferred to the originally reported UCL sprain. Altavilla is still likely to miss an extended period.

Juan Nicasio (RP, Seattle Mariners) – Nicasio’s time off will depend on whether he gets his knee drained or not, and if he is able to continue throwing throughout his recovery.

Gorkys Hernandez (OF, San Francisco Giants) – Hernandez is expected to return on Monday.

Tyler Lyons (RP, St. Louis Cardinals) – There is a shot that this is a minor sprain. No concrete information has been provided. Tommy John is always a possibility.

Daniel Robertson (SS, Tampa Bay Rays) – I’ve listed Robertson as DTD, though we can expect further details on Monday. A DL stint could mean we see Adames again.

Doug Fister (SP, Texas Rangers) – Fister left his recent start with a knee strain. He will likely miss about a month.

Stephen Strasburg (SP, Washington Nationals) – There is no structural damage, so there’s no reason for concern at the moment. We will see how quickly they can get the swelling down and gauge Strasburg’s return once he begins throwing again.

Brandon Kintzler (RP, Washington Nationals) – Kintzler appears confident that he will return in 10 days. That seems optimistic for a forearm strain unless it is very minor.

Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, New York Mets) – Cabrera slipped out of the box and grasped at the upper portion of his left hamstring. He remained in the game for an inning or two, before being removed. I don’t think a DL stint is coming as this seemed very minor, but expect an update on Monday.

Hi Perfect Game,

Saying ‘the same shoulder inflammation’ isn’t fair – we know the shoulder is inflamed, though we don’t know what structures in particular are affected, nor do we know the underlying cause. At this point, it could be a multitude of things as the shoulder is so complex. I think our best approach is to monitor news that becomes available discussing his return to throwing and trying to extrapolate a return date from there. Keep in mind that the longer he abstains from throwing, the longer it will take to get back into game shape.

Thanks for the question – I’m hoping for a quick recovery!

Barry

Just grabbed Jimmy Nelson and stashed him in my only DL spot. Do you have any news other than a possible return around the All Star break?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Jeff Davis

Hi Barry,

I’ve had Nelson stashed all year, so I’m excited about his return as well! He was shut down from throwing for about 10 days last month which had me concerned initially, though it appeared to be precautionary. Prior to that break I was expecting him before the ASB, but now after is pretty reasonable. We will have more information and be able to pinpoint a return date more effectively once he begins a rehab assignment.

I’ll also try to include how that rehab assignment is going in future editions of the report!
