UPDATES

Dansby Swanson (SS, Atlanta Braves) – Swanson may require more DL time than initially anticipated. I’ll leave his expected return at 5-14-18 for now, but don’t be surprised if he gets bumped back a few days.

Zach Britton (RP, Baltimore Orioles) – Britton continues to progress and streak towards an early June return.

Tyler Thornburg (RP, Boston Red Sox) – Thornburg has reportedly gained a tick or two (stadium gun had him at 95mph in his latest outing, but 97mph has been reported as well). A major concern following an adventure to Thoracic Park is that control takes a while to return. We’re seeing that as Thornburg has walked 3 in 3.2 IP. He may be a sneaky option in holds leagues if he gains some control.

Danny Salazar (SP/RP, Cleveland Indians) – Salazar will be shut down for 7-10 days as he’s been diagnosed with R shoulder impingement. There is a lot going against Salazar these days, and we may not see him until much later in the season.

Clayton Kershaw (SP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Kershaw has thrown lightly from 60ft, but not done much more than that. I’ve pushed his estimated return back to 5-18-18, and he may get pushed back again.

Stephen Vogt (C, Milwaukee Brewers) – Vogt was placed on the DL60, and season-ending shoulder surgery has been mentioned as a possibility. Vogt is seeking a second opinion, but this may spell the end of his 2018.

Pat Neshek (RP, Philadelphia Phillies) – Neshek has suffered an additional injury – to his right shoulder this time. It’s no longer realistic to expect him to return in May.

Hunter Pence (OF, San Francisco Giants) – Pence suffered a setback and has been shut down from his rehab assignment.

Dominic Leone (RP, St. Louis Cardinals) – Leone’s nerve related injury has been referred to as “baffling”. That’s exactly what you want. A range of outcomes remain, and I don’t have many details available to speculate which nerve is affected and how. Some ugly conditions are becoming a real possibility, and I feel like I’ll be moving Leone back again shortly.

Adam Eaton (OF, Washington Nationals) – Eaton is seeking a second opinion as he is still experiencing a lot of pain in his injured ankle. We’re getting to the point where an operation may be required. I’ve moved his estimated return back to the start of June, though it could fall back further depending on the surgeon’s opinion.

ADDITIONS

Braden Shipley (RP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – There isn’t a lot of news on Shipley, who was called up and placed on the DL a few days later. He has been listed as battling elbow inflammation. He may return when first eligible, though it doesn’t feel likely at the moment.

Darren O’Day (RP, Baltimore Orioles) – This doesn’t feel serious, and O’Day is likely to return when he is first eligible.

David Price (SP, Boston Red Sox) – I have conflicting feelings on this one. On the one hand, carpal tunnel syndrome is better than median nerve entrapment higher in the forearm (see: Melancon), and Price’s case is reportedly mild. On the other hand, the Sox expect him to not head to the DL. It’s fine if they want to manage this conservatively, but I feel you may as place Price on the DL, and have him miss a start or two and focus on recovery. If they rush him back within a week or so I have no confidence that will be the last we’ll hear of this issue this year.

Jason Heyward (OF, Chicago Cubs) – Heyward bumped his noggin during Sunday’s game. Right now I’m leaning towards a two-week absence, but brain injuries are extremely difficult to predict. We’re in wait-and-see mode.

Yu Darvish (SP, Chicago Cubs) – Darvish, unfortunately, skipped a start against the Marlins due to the flu. He is likely to return when first eligible on 5-14-18.

Nick Delmonico (OF, Chicago White Sox) – Delmonico is dealing with a bruised quad and should return within a few days.

Nick Castellanos (3B, Detroit Tigers) – Castellanos is dealing with some soreness and swelling of his left knee. Return to play rests with the swelling aspect – if it’s limiting range of motion he could miss a portion of the weekend. If they are able to manage the swelling, he could return on Friday (I’m leaning towards this outcome).

Leonys Martin (OF, Detroit Tigers) – This appears minor enough that he shouldn’t need much more than the minimum DL stint. We should get a more concrete timetable within a couple of days.

Alex Wilson (RP, Detroit Tigers) – Wilson tore 95% of his plantar fascia in his left foot which is essentially my worst nightmare. I anticipate he’ll undergo an operation to repair the fascia, which will likely have him out for 6-10 weeks.

Jordan Zimmermann (SP, Detroit Tigers) – Zimmermann is currently expecting to return when first eligible, so we’ll roll with that. He received a cortisone injection to control the swelling in his right shoulder.

Tony Cingrani (RP, Los Angeles Dodgers) – I expect we’ll hear more information within a few days, which will include a more concrete timetable.

Wade Miley (SP, Milwaukee Brewers) – Miley is currently projected to miss 4-6 weeks with a strained oblique. I’m leaning closer to the 6-week side of that timetable.

Nick Franklin (2B, Milwaukee Brewers) – No official timetable has been provided. Franklin will likely be optioned once he is ready to return.

Hansel Robles (RP, New York Mets) – Robles is dealing with some sort of knee injury which he incurred during Tuesday’s game. X-rays came back negative, but the true concern is ligament damage. Robles is scheduled for an MRI and news should come out within a day or two which could quickly take this from ‘soreness’ to ‘sprain’.

Todd Frazier (3B, New York Mets) – I suspect we will get a more concrete timetable this weekend, but for now 2-4 weeks seems reasonable.

Trevor Cahill (SP, Oakland Athletics) – Oakland expects a minimum DL stint for Cahill as this sounds like a precautionary move. Let’s hope he can return to the dominance we saw in his most recent outing after skipping a start.

Adam Morgan (RP, Philadelphia Phillies) – Limited information is currently available, though this could end up being a minimum DL stint.

Adeiny Hecharvarria (SS, Tampa Bay Rays) – Well, you’ve got to watch the video of this one if you haven’t already. Hecharvarria should return prior to this weekend.

Robinson Chirinos (C, Texas Rangers) – Chirinos is to be considered DTD for now, but keep in mind that this is his receiving wrist and his front wrist while swinging. If he’s not feeling better by the weekend he may benefit from some DL time.

Drew Robinson (OF, Texas Rangers) – This was initially reported as a retro-active DL move, which makes me think Robinson may return when first eligible.

Kyle

Hey, Jeff!

Thanks for the great material.

Have you heard anything about Wil Myers’ situation?

Jeff Davis

Hi Kyle,

I haven’t heard anything, but his progression to play will likely look a lot like Yelich and Schoop – not a lot of updates until he goes out and tests the oblique, at which point things can move pretty quickly.

For Myers, I’m basically setting the estimated return date for the date I could conceivably expect him to return if we get an update that he is rehabbing prior to the next Injury Report (in this case, May 14th).

It’s not ideal – I’d love to give you a concrete date – but with oblique strains, so much rest is required that we really are limited in terms of the updates that are available.

Hope this helped! Thank you for reading and for your kind comments!

Steve

Daniel Murphy returning on May 18? I’d put the odds of that one at slim to quite slim, jim.

Jeff Davis

I’m not sure that’s what I believe, Steve.

Sorry, I just wanted to join in on the rhyming game. I stuck Murphy with the May 18th date for a few reasons. The first is that I haven’t seen any concrete updates for about a week now, and it’s possible that we get an update in a day or so that the pain he’s experiencing has subsided and he’s working on running. Don’t get me wrong – that scenario is not likely – but it’s possible, and I think at this point I’d rather have Murphy’s date for the earliest possible return I can conceive and then move him back accordingly. The second thought is that Murphy is reportedly hitting without concern, and that’s the largest part of his game, and the Nats could really use him in the line-up even if he’s not running at full capacity. If I’m being honest, an early June return probably makes more sense at this point.

I hope you see my thinking there, and that it helps to clear up why I listed May 18th. Thank you for reading!
