UPDATES

Luiz Gohara (SP, Atlanta Braves) – Gohara begins a rehab assignment Tuesday (4-17-18), and will reportedly need four rehab starts. Assuming he takes the ball every fifth day, that has him returning around the end of Week 6 (5-11-18).

Gabriel Ynoa (SP, Baltimore Orioles) – Ynoa is dealing with a bought of shoulder inflammation. It sounds as though he’ll get an anti-inflammatory injection on Monday, which should allow him to continue his throwing program shortly.

Drew Pomeranz (SP, Boston Red Sox) – Scheduled to start Friday (4-20-18). Mind the DLH – he’s looking shaky in his rehab appearances.

David Price (SP/RP, Boston Red Sox) – Seems we got the fortunate outcome. Price is set to start this Tuesday (4-17-18).

J.C. Ramirez (SP, Los Angeles Angels) – Ramirez will receive Tommy John surgery on 4-17-18 which will end his season.

Elvis Andrus (SS, Texas Rangers) – Andrus has been diagnosed with a fracture of the olecranon process of his right ulna. The Rangers have provided a timetable of 6-8 weeks, though this feels optimistic. I’m leaning towards 8-10 weeks total. The olecranon process is the attachment site for the triceps so Andrus and the Rangers will need to be certain that the fracture has unionized prior to starting a throwing program. It is an excellent sign that the fracture does not require surgery – it means that the fracture is non-displaced and likely no damage has been done to the articular surface of the elbow joint.

ADDITIONS

Taijuan Walker (SP, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Walker left his most recent start with tightness in his right forearm. He will receive an MRI on Monday (4-16-18) which should provide us with more information. Hopefully, it comes back clean.

Jonathan Schoop (2B, Baltimore Orioles) – Schoop hopes to return when first eligible, and that’s not out of the realm of possibilities for a grade 1 oblique strain.

Mookie Betts (OF, Boston Red Sox) – Sounds mild. Look for Mookie to return to the lineup during the first half of next week.

Bobby Poyner (RP, Boston Red Sox) – Sox have not released a timetable or a degree of strain so I’ve listed a generous timetable for a grade 1 strain.

Jesse Winker (OF, Cincinnati Reds) – Winker remains DTD with a sore shoulder that has held him out since Friday (4-13-18). He could return early next week, but I’m slightly hesitant as the Reds haven’t provided many updates on how he’s doing.

Paulo Orlando (OF, Kansas City Royals) – Orlando has experienced some knee soreness, though he has simply moved from OF to DH duties. He figures to return to normal health shortly.

Logan Forsythe (2B, Los Angeles Dodgers) – Forsythe did not appear to suffer any structural damage to his shoulder. He should be able to manage the inflammation with conservative techniques and return within a few weeks.

Eric Thames (1BMilwaukee Brewers) – As it stands now, Thames with likely return within a week. Based on watching the mechanism of injury and Thames reaction, I can’t foresee this being more than a minimum DL stint even if the Brewers DL10 him (which may make sense with the number of injuries they’re juggling).

Ryan Braun (OF, Milwaukee Brewers) – Braun has been battling a tight back, but he was still able to pinch hit on Sunday (4-15-18). He should return to normal duties early this week.

Kevin Plawecki (C, New York Mets) – My first thought with this one was a carpal fracture – specifically the capitate which would have been ugly for two main reasons: 1. the capitate has a very poor blood supply and heals slowly. 2. I would have annoyed you all with jokes about Plawecki being de-capitated… After finding a close-up image it seems the bruising pattern is distal to the carpal rows and therefore better represents a tiny mild fracture in a metacarpal. This would represent the best case scenario and can have Plawecki returning closer to the 4-week end of the timetable if all goes well.

Liam Hendriks (RP, Oakland Athletics) – Little information is currently available, but Hendricks will likely miss about two weeks.

Josh Harrison (2B, Pittsburgh Pirates) – This one is difficult to judge. All reports I’ve found said hand injury, but it seemed like it got the forearm (and even Harrison’s protective gear) on replays I was able to find. While it looked minor, Harrison left and looked quite angry. I’m inclined to guess this is a contusion until we hear otherwise. He’ll undergo testing early this week.

Eric Hosmer (1B, San Diego Padres) – Hosmer missed two games this weekend with back tightness. He hopes to return Monday. There’s currently no indication that this issue will hold him out of the lineup for an extended period.

Buster Posey (C, San Francisco Giants) – Posey is dealing with some swelling in his right thumb. Bochy has asserted that Posey will be in the lineup on Tuesday.

Sam Tuivailala (RP, St. Louis Cardinals) – Limited information available. Tuivailala will likely miss at least two weeks.

Kevin Kiermaier (OF, Tampa Bay Rays) – Kiermaier will undergo an MRI on Monday, but this sounds like a thumb UCL sprain. Severity and treatment option will define our timetable – we will likely settle somewhere between 4 and 8 weeks off.

Josh Donaldson (3B, Toronto Blue Jays) – Well, here we are. After missing most of spring training for nondescript reasons Don came out throwing pillows across the diamond and was described as experiencing dead-arm. The Jays eventually slotted him at DH to rest his arm, but about a week later he’s DL bound. It sounds like Don has been battling this for a while – the timing of it doesn’t make a ton of sense, though. Did Don injure his shoulder during an offseason workout? Is there more to this story when we’re being led to believe? I can understand Don wanting to play as much as possible in his walk year – and a right shoulder injury shouldn’t (and hasn’t appeared to) affect his swing too much, but it would be great to see him return to full health prior to returning. For now, partially due to the retroactive DL move and limited other information, I’m leaning towards a minimal DL stint.

Anthony Rendon (3B, Washington Nationals) – Rendon fouled a ball off his foot, and the Nats are taking things slowly with him. There is currently no indication that he should be out for an extended period.

Brian Goodwin (OF, Washington Nationals) – Goodwin was not in the lineup to start Sunday’s game due to a non-descript left wrist injury. He should return during the first half of this week unless we hear otherwise.

Salvie Perez timeline probably needs updated, he’s already caught 4 innings in rehab 1-3 HR, will dh then catch again, I’m guessing around a Week? You have 5-7-18

Jeff Davis

Hi Joe!
I have noticed his rehab assignment has been going well – I moved his timetable up about a week on this edition because of that. However, it still feels a bit aggressive. I wanted to take another peek later this week to see how things are going before making any major changes. There is a chance he returns during that last week of April, but the first week of May still seems more likely to me.
I will keep tabs on things and update accordingly!

Hey Jeff. Great stuff as always! May be too early to tell, but any reason for concern with Greinke’s back spasms?

Jeff Davis

Hi Nick!
No concerns at the moment as it seemed like an isolated incident. Greinke said that it loosed up a bit for him during a swing later in the game, and he was reportedly taking grounders at first with Goldy the next day – if I was having back difficulties I wouldn’t be optionally bending over to take grounders.
It sounds like he’ll be fine to make his next start!
